What can cause sensitive skin in babies?
Baby’s skin is new and tender, their skin cells are smaller and therefore up to 30% thinner than an adults. Their skin needs time to strengthen, which means they can have a weaker outer barrier in their early months. This is why internal and external skin irritations can be quite common in new babies.
Some examples are:
Harsh products
Using products that have harsh chemicals, conditioners or plastics can irritate the delicate barrier of baby’s skin. Be conscious of the household products you’re using, such as laundry detergents and soaps.
Environmental factors
Your baby could be sensitive to harsher elements when you go outside. For example, if the weather is too hot or too cold, it can cause minor irritation. It’s important to be aware of the UV rays your baby is exposed to as well.
Diaper & wipe irritants
Diapers and wipes are used on the most sensitive areas for little ones, imagine wearing plastic underwear all day every day, ouch! Many traditional diapers and wipes are made with toxins, plastics, conditioners, crude oil, and other harmful materials.
Existing skin conditions
We are all unique and beautiful in our own ways. Our babies are born with their own special make up and may be prone to different skin conditions. These could include eczema, dry skin or allergies. It’s great to chat with a professional if you think this could be the case.
How to soothe your baby’s sensitive skin
Look at your products
Take a minute to look at the ingredients of your laundry detergent, soaps and other household products. Choose products that use the most natural ingredients, as they will be more gentle on bubs skin. We suggest you test new products before using them as well, you can do this with a small patch test and wait 24 hours to minimize any adverse reactions.
Be conscious of your surroundings
It can be hard to tell whether your baby is too hot or too cold, especially when they’re in their first few months and they run at a slightly different temperature. Watch for signs of discomfort or irritation and dress bub in easily removable layers to make your life easier. Warm water can be another culprit for dry skin, so try only bathing your little one in appropriately tempered water for no longer than 10 minutes.
Choose natural, eco baby products
Protect your baby’s sensitive skin by using nappies and wipes that are soft and plant based, removing their exposure to traditional harsh plastics, toxins and chemicals. Every layer counts, so when choosing your nappies have a look at what the top sheet, back sheet and core layers are made with. When you look at wipes, try to select ones that return to the earth.
